I seem to be out of ideas -- but an inflatable cell phone is a good one

I hate to move Otto from first listing here, since he probably accounts for most of the traffic I've received in the last couple of weeks, but last night at Terry's birthday party, where we had chicken legs (not really chicken legs, but beef that has been cut up, put on skewers, dipped in egg, rolled cracker crumbs, browned in butter, and baked -- also known as "city chicken," says Cathy), cheese bread, and scalloped potatoes, among other delicacies (including birthday cake, of course), I thought I'd come up with a new great idea, which is an inflatable cell phone, and I felt like maybe I'd gotten my groove back. Sadly for me, it is not a new idea -- someone's already entered it at half-bakery. My reception there was rude the first time around, so I refuse to comment on his idea there. But I will say that one difference between his idea and mine is that I'd like to have the inflated version be really ridiculously big, and I'd give it a pocket in the botton that you could fill with water for ballast.

I was inspired by those Pokia phones -- I really want one.

oooohhh, i really want one too. i've long thought cell phones would be better if they were more like phones--i love the idea of seeing people walking down the street talking on full-sized receivers. and i think you & i may even have had a conversation about inflatable cell phones.

I love these pokia phones! A friend of mine has made two phones to help limit public use of cell phones. Both are art pieces and not entirely practical, but fun none the less. One causes a capsule of dye in your purse of pants to spread red dye for the length of time you are on the phone so that people can see who spends most of their time on their phone. The other links the power supply of the phone to a gameboy that must be given to someone else to play while the person is on the phone. when the person loses three games or stops playing for more than 30 seconds, the phone disconnects. This way folks who are with people who have phones have as much control over the situation (and something to do) while the other person is chatting.
